SONG BIRDS! A night of performances: Open Call

Deadline: April 25th, 2023
Performance: May 20, 2023, Skowhegan NY Office

Submission Form

Astounding, prolific performers, birds coo, chirp, trill, warble, babble, wail, honk, cluck, screech, caw, chatter, whistle, tweet, and SING! Bird songs have inspired music in innumerable ways, with compositions and instruments imitating the range of a bewitching call, field recordings of birds layered onto songs, and duets harmonizing with birds themselves, as they sit on your hand or sing from a tree far away.

For the third season of the Skowhegan Bird Club, we seek proposals for performances that engage with the sounds, rhythms, manners, and worlds of birds. Proposals may take a variety of forms, including but not limited to all imaginations of vocal, instrumental and experimental music, poetry, solo pieces and group collaborations.

Proposals may be submitted by artists from any location, but performances must be capable of being presented in a live, in-person format. Though there is no strict limit to the duration of the performance, we recommend keeping it under 10 minutes.

Format:

  • 1. Proposal with description of performance including duration and equipment needs (200 words)

  • 2. Artist Statement (100 words)

  • 3. Link to website or work samples

*Please note we cannot cover travel or accommodations.

I picked up this rope, the rock that looks like wood, and the quahog shell (the purple prized by native peoples, traded as currency) at the beach this past weekend. The feathers and mushroom have been in various pockets for a while, a bluebird and a flicker feather. I like the way the rope looks like an S! for Skowhegan and the way these forms, textures, and collected represent different elements of an ecosystem- including us people animals (rope). - Ash Ferlito

Fielding #2: A guided bird walk

Date + Time: Sunday, May 7 at 9:30 AM EST
Location:
Inwood Park, NYC
Meeting Spot:
West 218th Street (Link to map)

We are excited to return to Inwood Park, NYC, for another guided bird walk with Nadir Souirgi. This time around we'll be focusing on migratory species. The time for the event is TBD, but sign up for emails to receive updates.

Nadir Souirgi was introduced to birdwatching by a close family friend at the age of 5. From 2010-2021 he founded the Harlem County Bird Club to introduce birdwatching to his students. Nadir has worked as a bird guide for NYC Audubon, a bird and environmental justice organization focusing on education and research. He is currently an MFA candidate in painting at the Yale School of Art.

Give us a shout if you plan on coming, or just show up. Friends are welcome too!
